Old Shoes Live on Kugs!

PPR 28 Digital Release

April 2010

FREE DOWNLOAD

Complete and awkward old shoes live performance January 4th 2005. I was going to turn 21 in a month. This show was recorded on Matt Fu, and Jackson Long's Cornerpocket Local show on KUGS in Bellingham Washington. Unearthed the recording while working on the Old Shoes Anthology. Thought it would be a good teaser for the anthology coming out. Lots of covers and early versions of songs on this recording.

Poor School

Live at the Raven Cafe 9/27/06

ppr 27 1st pressing: 100 CASS

August 09

$5 (postage paid)

Poor School plays banging improv, punk, noise jazz. This tape release delivers a lo-fi, bombastic live set from the now defunct Raven Cafe in Missoula, MT. This show Poor School shared the bill with usaisamonster. The band was however coaxed into closing the night for fear their banging drums, wailing sax, and distorted guitar would scare away the crowd. This tape can be a 24 Minute Cassingle since it has only one song on it. However the B-side will take you to an unfamiliar memory from the A-Side. Hand Painted and limited to 100 tapes, this is one noisy treat.

June 09

$5 (postage paid)

6 song Cassette EP recorded in my kitchen on Front Street. Stripped down compared to Fruit Trees. Tapes come with FREE digital download and 7 bonus songs.

Review:

There’s something a little bit Billy Joe Armstrong about Tyson Ballew’s vocals—the way he sings about crushes made me recently unearth Green Day’s 1,039/ Smoothed Out Slappy Hours just to hear “The One I Want.” That said, the local troubadour injects his own dramatic notions of love into his newest album, and darkens them with an end-of-the-world earnestness.

In “The Hatchet,” he sings, “There’s unforeseen dangers in everything and we’d be lucky if we fell in love with anybody.” He counterbalances that in “Honest Friends” when he unabashedl

y belts out, “This heart gets broken, this heart gets smashed, but I guarantee you, this heart is gonna last!”

These kinds of songs evoke the excitement of first crushes and loitering on the sidewalk outside of all-ages rock shows, or hanging out with friends in parks at midnight. The fact that the album is on tape makes it all the more nostalgic, and the little details—clapping effects sharp as shotguns, poppy vocal layering—gives it brightness despite bleak undertones.

In fact, Ballew might be the perfect acoustic guitarist to hang out with during the apocalypse, mostly because his angst is cradled in starry-eyed acceptance for whatever excitement—good or bad—happens next. (Erika Fredrickson)

Hail Santa! is an idea hatched by Trevor Martin the Christmas of 2003, It was supposed to be a metal band doing christmas classics and originals, it has taken until 2007 for Hail Santa! to produce anything, these recordings are not metal, they are mostly improv/noise/folk. Sorry, maybe next year we will be metal and play a show....this was a cathartic exercise in playing music after a creative hiatus and also an exercise to seize Christmas, whatever that means....

Tyson Ballew

Fruit Trees for Cassowaries

ppr 24 1st pressing: 50 CDR's, MASA 100 CASS

February 09

$5 (postage paid)

Tyson Ballew created two albums under the moniker Old Shoes, but Fruit Trees for Cassowaries—released under his name—has all the attributes a first solo album should have: passionate music, unashamedly autobiographical lyrics and room to grow.

Instrumental flourishes, including synthesized xylophones, accordions, and a toy piano, all lend a fresh, optimistic tone to the effort. The upbeat attitude is mirrored in Ballew’s earnest lyrics, which, despite some bleak moments, are mostly honest and hopeful. “Things Are Different Now” contains the line “I still believe in the songs we’d sing…There’s still time, we can change this world. At least we can change ourselves.” And with a voice reminiscent of both Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and the Fruit Bat’s Eric Johnson, Ballew admits the ironic truth that “Everyone inspires me except for maybe those rock stars, ’cause they are selling sadness and apathy.” This indictment of the modern music machine fits perfectly with songs advocating for small-town punk teens in “Electric City Hardcore” and lonely lovers in “Bumble Bee.”

Ballew exudes hopeless romanticism, an endearing quality that will hopefully continue to flavor his future music.

lift ev'ry voice and sing

PPR 19 / 1st Pressing: 50 cdr

March 2007

Out of Print (coming soon on the Old Shoes Anthology)

In Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing local musician Tyson Ballew, aka Old Shoes, belts out acoustic pop-punk ditties like the fate of the world depends on it. He strums exuberantly, fingerpicks odd tempos and yell-sings in wavering keys. He's as restless as a riot grrl and earnest as a poet. But if that all sounds a bit annoying, rest assured, it's not. Ballew has an incredible ability to be endearingly off-kilter. His strong opinions are softened by a capacity for forgiveness, and he's just wry enough to keep the positive tone from getting too candied. Sometimes he's political, like in "FTH v. MFD" where he sings:

"you can't take out those big guys, but you can still save your communities/'Cause there's a lot of small-town assholes...gonna be wishin' they hadn't messed with me."

Mostly, though, this album is about how much Ballew values his friendships. There's a song addressed to Milo and Stella (the young children of local husband and wife duo, Two Year Touqe) promising them a great future."From Cynthia's Belly and Into Infamy" invokes old music buddies from now-defunct music joint, Jay's Upstairs. Each song is an intimate story, deftly distilled and executed with great care. - by Erika Fredrickson

This is Noise Noise Noise's first full length. Recorded by J Waylon Porcupine(The Reddmen) This is what MRR has to say about it: Wow. What a surprise. Never heard of these folks and they fuckin' smoke. Over-cranked distorto garage pop punk. Sounding like the bastard child of SCARED OF CHAKA, FYP, and even the MARKED MEN. The songs are all over the yard, from 40-second blazers to anthemic pop numbers. It's rough and scrappy with hooks galore...and I'm sure a blast live. Every song on this little gem is a keeper and like most bands from the arse end of nowhere (Montana) they have tons of personality and originality. Class. (Tim Brooks)

This is an EP which if I had known what I was doing could have been a full lentgh but that doesn't matter cause this CD sucks. It's all about breaking up with someone. It's lame and terrible. This CD was recorded in a studio and really should have been home recorded but I didn't know at that point how to get my music on a CD. There are 3 outtakes from the studio session. They are awful, but could have been put on and made the cd a 10 track piece of crap.

Tracklisting:

  1. My First Punk Show
  2. 5 am grey
  3. a song for tommrow, but lets listen today
  4. sara likes the frames
  5. car song

Spencer and I made up a song called Soccermatch. There are over 10 versions of it. All of them were available(with exception to the Last Soccermatch Jazz Oddessy) on this cassatte release. Spencer put together all of all the recordings from all the tapes with great hand drawn art and liner notes. The tape also featured Saftey Tips from The Get Along Gang. It was always a crowd favorite when we played it at shows. I love this tape. This was on Spencer's tape label Little Robot Records, it was release number 0. The b-side of the tape had the ep worth of material that Battery Operated Boyfriend recorded. I hope to have all the mp3's available soon.

Starting a record label is easy. Buy a tape recorder, record shit. Then dub it with tape decks and write stuff on the tapes. Easy. In highschool I recorded 8 sad demos that will never see the light of day. But aside from those I also recorded live shows that my bands and my friends bands would play. The label used to be called Poser Punk Records and live shows were promoted as Poser Punk Productions. This tape was not the first thing I handed out to people and said was on my label but it was the first real conceptualized release. All the bands on it were bands I was in. And none of the recordings were ever on albums that were released. Live AdHd, Raincoat Mafia, old shoes, and my friends band Battery Operated Boyfriend who I don't think I asked if I could put them on the tape. I love that band. During this time punk rock and the songs my friends wrote were all I cared about. It took me years to understand what we were really doing. We were beautiful even if our songs weren't. I even foolishly gave Calvin Johnson this tape at a show in Missoula when I saw him. He never wrote. God I was so young.....
